Equine Dosage Notes

Unlike, dogs and cats, the equine minimum effective dose is 0.1 mg of CBD per pound. The horse’s slower metabolic rate does not ‘burn through’ the cannabinoids as quickly as the smaller animals. Hence the lower dosing rates.

Unless there is injury or pain, trainers and veterinarians alike report starting low and moving up as needed or with the advice of a veterinarian.

Both medical and competitive equine websites appear to prefer a ‘starting dose’ for horses at 0.1mg to 0.2mg/lb. So, a horse weighing 1,000 pounds should start with 100 milligrams of CBD daily (1000 lbs. x 0.1 mg); 1200 pound horse starts with 120 milligrams, etc.

This dosage may increase daily as needed to achieve the results the owner/trainer requires. The average daily dose is +/- 0.3 mg per pound; the maximum dose advised is 0.75 mg per pound. And it is wise to consult a veterinarian.

15ml = 300 drops =
30ml = 600 drops = 2.5 mg/drop therefore:

  • 1000# horse needing 100mg CBD = 40 drops daily 100/2.5 or about 1 1/3 dropper
  • 1200# horse needing 120mg CBD = 48 drops daily 120/2.5 or about 1 ½ dropper

The average dropper size for 30ml holds a bit over 30 drops (1 ml); 4 dropperfuls make up 3 ml.
